- having lost confidence or enthusiasm; disheartened.
We become discouraged so by situations in our lives. This could be work, uni, ministry, relationships, you name it. Frustrations occur everywhere, and it causes us to doubt and lose confidence.
In those moments, we are overwhelmed by situations and are unsure how things will look days, weeks or months later. We don’t seem to have control over our lives but, we know someone who can help us, and that is, Jesus.
Discouragement comes when we lose focus on where God is.
God is Omniscient – ever present
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1 You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
God knows the word that comes out of our tongue and our hearts.
1 John 3:20 New International Version (NIV)
20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
God knows our hearts and our thoughts. He is there with you in the fire and storms the same way he was the fourth man in the fire in Daniel 3:25. He didn’t say that we won’t pass tribulations but, he said that we will overcome them.
I’ll give a short example of where I discovered this.
I was going through a winter season in my life whereby, my efforts were not rewarded as I would like. I was wondering where God was and why I was being broken on almost every level. However, God kept showing his love through great friends and kept reminding me that, he is always there with me. The more I began to focus on him, the more I saw joy through the trials and situation.
The important thing I learnt was that, in all situations, thanksgiving for the victory is important. And secondly, focus on Jesus and key into his word. Those are the moments where one’s faith and integrity will be tested. But in the end, we were never meant to be independent. God created man to be dependent on him and one another. This is why we say no man is an island because God can use anyone to spread a message.
Recently, I was able to encourage a very good friend of mine because I noticed he was going through his own winter season. Looking back, I just thanked God for taking me through mine.
Romans 5:3 New International Version (NIV)
3 Not only so, but we[a] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
