Serving. Serving is such an important thing as a Christian because I believe we cannot truly be Christ-like without a heart that looks to serve. With a heart that looks to serve and help in any way shape or form, a very high degree of humility is required, not only that but the gain you should get is the joy from helping one another, never look to serve a fellow brother/sister with the mind of your own personal gain, it should always be out of love and with Joy.
I want to talk about 2 aspects of serving
Why should we serve?
How can we serve?
First off let us define service
To serve someone is to perform duties for another person. In other words, you’re doing something that they could do, on their behalf.
First, we will look at why it is important to serve one another as Christians and children of God.
And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord , choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .”
Joshua 24:15 NKJV
This is how I want to lay the foundation of what I want to say this evening. This scripture explicitly tells us, how can we serve someone before first serving God. Offering to help someone and anything else that goes way beyond just help, you choose not to do something to aid someone else, all of these things have to be for God. Before we can look to serve one another, first we must seek to please God in everything we do.
Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2:6
I use this scripture because Jesus came to serve us, not just through signs and wonders but also through death on the cross, not for his own personal gain but so that everyone until the end of time has an opportunity to receive salvation and know God for themselves and be saved. Furthermore, the famous story of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples and even how Jesus was raised as a carpenter, how he lived a simple life, these attributes are not only how again if we are to reflect Christ we should have these attitudes but drives home what I said at the start. You cannot serve God without first humbling yourself before the Lord. Through this attitude of humility, God will lift us up. Jesus told the disciples to take up their cross and deny themselves. Put aside your own desires and think about how you can serve God and serve others through humility and love for one another. To look at it from another angle we also have a duty to utilise what God gave us in order to allow his glory to shine through. Whether you’re an instrumentalist or you like to get your hands dirty and clean, you can sing, dance, shout, there is always a place to serve in Gods house, not only that but if we look at the parable of the talents, the master was visibly upset with the servant who decided to hide away his talent/gift. God doesn’t want us to hide away our gifts and what we’ve been blessed with but rather use it to share the word and serve him through those gifts.
Now I will go onto how we can look to serve. I don’t want anyone to have the idea that the only way a person can serve God is through the church. If anything that you do outside of the church is more important than what you do inside. You’re in church 3 hours out hours during the week but also, the people who need God are out in the world.
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
I Peter 4:10 NKJV
God again has instructed us to use our gifts to bless one another as a representation of his grace upon us. Ever heard how our testimonies can actually bring people to Christ? They’re all examples of Gods grace and we can serve the people by sharing them and letting them know how awesome our God is. Evangelism, praise and worship, being a light in your workplace, the list goes on, anything you put your mind to and work hard at not for your own benefit but because you want God to be glorified is seen as a service unto him
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
Colossians 3:23 NKJV
I believe today, God is going to open many doors for people to serve him with everything that they have
God bless you
