So, you’ve just received Christ into your life or have been a believer for a while and now you’re stuck with a sin that you haven’t quite shaken its grip off of you yet despite the many tries you’ve done to do so. The bible mentions in [Hebrews 12:1-3] that each of us have a sin that’ll stick to us like glue, but Christ reassures us that He will provide a way of escape in each temptation that we may go through [1 Corinthians 10:13]
Naturally, we have a tendency to shift the blame of said sin to others for introducing it into our lives or perhaps you’ve chosen to believe that the sin you’re doing isn’t as bad as what others in the world are currently doing, or maybe you’ve come to the conclusion that it is a part of who you are as a person. Today in this chapter we’ll look into how to tackle each of these mindsets together and see how each of them do not reflect the way God intends for us to live in this world.
The Blame Game and Comparing Sin
When it comes to the deciding of who should take responsibility for a certain action, we tend to shift the blame onto others and are not willing to take the weight of said action upon ourselves, this is a perfect picture of how it looks when we choose to pin others or even the enemy for something we willing have chosen to do knowing that it is sin toward God.
The man replied, “it was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it” [Genesis 3:12] [NLT]
It’s been apparent since the beginning of creation that we often choose to place blame or partial blame in this case to others rather than taking full responsibility for disobeying the instructions or the leading God’s word in our lives. Have you ever had the thought of comparing what you’ve done to someone else who has done far worse or the same deed as you’ve just done/continue to do? Then you’ve fallen for the common assumption that your sin shouldn’t be measured at the same level as someone else or perhaps you feel you’d rather have it to be pardoned altogether.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God [Romans 3:23] [NIV]
The scripture above lets us know that we are on the same level when it comes to sin and we are in need of God’s saving grace and salvation if we are to ever connect with the Lord.
Identifying with Sin and Christ in You
Most of us know who we are or want to be in life, but if you stop and think of who you’ve become, you’d be shocked to see that along the way you picked up habits or behaviours that before you’d naturally say no to. [Proverbs 13:20] tells us that who we walk with will impact our lives regardless of the method we use this truth will still in effect. Whatever impacts our lives and penetrates into our thoughts and day to day life will eventually become our identity that we walk around with, so for example if you never used to smoke but walked around other smokers and then picked up the habit its only a matter of time that you’ll start identifying yourself to be a smoker.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. [2 Corinthians 5:17] [ESV]
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” [1 Corinthians 15:33]
This scripture tells us that our identity should be that Christ lives in us and that we should live as a new creation and not continue in our old ways, in addition to this in our second scripture it talks about who we should be surrounded by if we are ever to keep in line with the character God desires to develop in us. With all this said, I hope that you all continue to serve God in the way the Lord leads you to do so, while also remembering that your identity is in Christ and not in sin or status or in any other label/title you may give yourself or others may give unto you.
To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. [Colossians 1:27] [NIV]
