Whenever the conversation about prayer comes up, the first thought that often consumes the mind of a believer is, “I don’t pray as much as this or that person does.” But I believe that this is not the concern on the mind of God. It seems to me that God is more mindful of the habitual practice of prayer rather than a one-time four-hour stretch that doesn’t happen again for many days or weeks.
It seems that God loves to hear our voices every minute and every second. He admonishes us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to “pray always.” Not to pray lengthily, deeply, or with polished words—just to pray always. These prayers may come in bits and pieces here and there. They may not be eloquent or refined, but we are encouraged to pray anyway. It’s as though God is saying, “I want to build an enduring culture of communication with you, not witness a display of prowess or self-aggrandizement.”
If this is true, then as believers, we must focus on what is important to God, not what we deem most important based on cultural perspectives or environmental pressures.
When you are washing—pray.
When you are reading—pray.
When you are confused—pray.
When the world seems to be under your feet—pray.
When it feels like it’s on your shoulders—pray.
When you are joyful—pray.
When you are in sorrow—pray.
When you don’t have the time—pray.
When you have plenty of time—pray.
Pray always—not just a lot!
