I wanted to explore Matthew 15 but as I was writing my notes I realised that, there’s soooo much that goes on in the chapter
Before I go on, please understand that my understanding might be different to yours and that’s okay. I just pray that God will continue to reveal his word to us and for us to see it in our lives
Matthew 15 talks about the importance of words and the tongue but, Jesus makes reference to how tradition shouldn’t go against God’s commandments as then teacher of the law were asking Jesus why he is going against the traditions of the elders. (verse 2-3)
Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
Matthew 15:2-3 KJV
This made me think and ask whether we’ve done something similar in our own ways. Have we held tightly to an unknown tradition thinking that it was governed by God’s word to find out, it really wasn’t. And it’s root isn’t even biblical.
Maybe it’s good to reflect upon some of traditions we hold dear to ourselves.
Does it give God glory?
Later, Jesus calls them hypocrites as they expect others to follow the law and they condemn others for the exact same wrongs they are doing.
This is called self righteousness. When we see ourselves as blameless and we amplify more on the sin of others. And minimise our own as if God doesn’t see all sins as equal.
Sin is sin.
Jesus later says,
This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Matthew 15:8 KJV
Sin was what drew us away from God in the first place. But the core of Christianity is love. Loving God, others and yourself.
If you are truly close to God you will have compassion on others. You will see yourself smaller than others. You wouldn’t be amplifying on someone else’s sin for the sake of your own glory.
This is what the teachers of the law were doing. So what’s important is to check our heart, our mind and make sure that they are drawing closer to Jesus.
This isn’t easy since our human nature is selfish. But with the help of the Holy spirit to it’s able
