A LAMENTATION FROM A NIGERIAN

How did we get numb?
How can’t we feel?
The cries and woes
The shrieks from hell
Captured children,
Scary-eyed,
Captive ladies,
Painful groans
The bandits of terror
The causers of mayhem,
The pillagers,
They roam the Sahel,
Brandishing pain and suffering
They boast and gloat,
For they are confident,
That justice won’t be meted,
Indeed, they’re sure,
That their victims won’t be heard,
But how long will this go on?
How long will scars be felt?
How long will tears roll down?
Why can’t the children go out to play?
Why should the women live in fear?
Indeed, ’tis an anathema
We are told to protect ourselves,
For the Government is incapable
We move about in fear,
While our leaders
Are surrounded with escorts
I look forward to a country
And shall indeed contribute my quota,
In seeing that country,
Where my tribe does not matter,
Where incompetence doesn’t reign
And corruption is not king.
Where merit thrives,
And integrity is upheld,
But till then,
Thus remains my prayer:
O God of creation
Grant this our one request
Help us to build a nation,
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
