A short teaching by Kingsford Agbasi
Alright so as we all are aware we’re talking about our God being a merciful God tonight
The English dictionary defines mercy as
1. A tendency toward forgiveness, pity, or compassion.
2. Relenting; forbearance to cause or allow harm to another.
From these definitions, we can say that God is compassionate towards humanity and holds back when it comes to allowing people to suffer for their actions.
There are a lot of people who think that God started being merciful in the dispensation of grace. They think that in the days of the law, God immediately punished whoever transgressed but it’s far from that
Our opening scripture and another block of scripture will tell us otherwise as the teaching goes on…
The Bible speaks of sin offerings which were offered to God by His people to obtain remission of sins, for where there is no shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22). If God wasn’t merciful, he wouldn’t have offered a way out for His people
Let’s take our opening scripture…
(For the LORD thy God [is] a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
From this scripture, we can deduce three products of mercy:
GOD IS A MERCIFUL GOD!
There are uncountable instances in the Bible where God showed mercy but for the sake of time, I’ll state just one…
The Abraham-Sarah-Hagar-Ishmael Saga (Genesis 15-17)
So in Chapter 15, the Lord promised a child to Abram.
Fast forward to chapter 16, Sarai the wife of Abram advised him to lay with Hagar, their maid since she (Sarai) couldn’t bear children.
I know it’s a popular Bible story but quite long so I’ll just give us a summary
How many times have we listened to counsel that looked like an easy way out?
How many times have we taken a decision on our own because it looked consistent with with God’s will for us when it actually wasn’t?
So Abraham concurred and out of this came Ishmael.
There are times when things work out for us even though they are outside the will of God because of His mercy
In verse 17, one would expect that the Lord would hold it against Abram but no, He rather renewed his covenant with him and changes his name to Abraham meaning, father of many nations. He even went as far as changing the name “Sarai” to “Sarah”, meaning mother of many nations. Wow!
At the end of the day, they still bore their promised son, Isaac because the Lord was merciful enough to hold on to his end of the covenant. Note that one of the products of mercy is remembrance
The other instances are out of the Bible but not far from us – our own lives
There have been times when we messed up and should have suffered the consequences of our mistakes but the mercies of God delivered us.
We earlier said that one of the products of mercy was preservation – opposite of destruction.
We mess up almost everyday but the mercy of God never runs out.
For the LORD [is] good; his mercy [is] everlasting; and his truth [endureth] to all generations.
Our being saved and born again was out of the mercy of God.
Remember we earlier spoke about sin offerings as God’s way of showing mercy to the people of old. Now He Himself gave us the ultimate sacrifice (Christ) as yet another demonstration of His mercy 😭
Titus 3:5 and 1 Peter 1:3 testify to this…
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
1 Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Brethren, anytime we slip and we fall, we have to get back up and fight on cos we have assurance of the mercy of God. Let us not remain in our fallen state but approach the throne of grace with boldness (Hebrews 4:16)
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Let us not shy away from God but rather to him whenever we fall.
Let’s look at this scenario…
Imagine you step into a puddle or a pool of mud and get yourself dirty, do you stay there? Certainly not. You rather get yourself out of there and clean up.
That’s how it is in our walk with God. His mercy endures forever
In conclusion, there are times when God doesn’t directly show mercy to people. He does it through men like you and I. Let us be agents of the mercy of God in our world. For all you know, that person in your circle is still struggling because you are yet to show them mercy
The Bible speaks of times when Jesus was moved with compassion (mercy)
And it was out of compassion he performed his miracles
The mercy of God is so broad that we cannot exhaust it but I hope this few words ministered to you 🙏🏾. God bless you for your time and feel free to ask any questions. Thank you 😊
